Bruce Wittrig - Dallas Symphony violinist, violist Dmitry Kustanovitch and cellist Nicole Hansen Strydom – both members of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and pianist Christina Long will perform Brahms' Quartet for Piano and Strings No. 3 in C Minor, Opus 60 ("Werther"). Laurie Shulman, program annotator for the Dallas Symphony will provide pre-concert commentary about the importance of this work in the chamber music literature.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) began composing this work during a difficult period for him and his friends Robert and Clara Schumann. When Robert entered a mental asylum, Brahms attempted to provide moral support for Clara and her children. However, Brahms' own emotions were extremely strained due to his affection for Clara herself. In a letter to a friend, he described the first movement of this work as a sort of musical corollary to the suicidal desperation of Goethe's Werther. This comment resulted in the quartet’s common subtitle “Werther.”

Concerts annually showcase over fifty outstanding Metroplex professional musicians. In addition to the free Bancroft Family Concerts, FACP presents the free Basically Beethoven Festival in July. Each year, FACP's educational outreach programs, Dream Collectors and Community Classics, provide over 350 free performances in area public schools.

The National convention of National Association of Composers USA is going to be at Dallas on May 20. There will an evening concert as an culmination of the whole-day event. This concert is a collaboration of living composers and instrumentalists from around the country.

The composers are from Dallas (Wieslaw Rentowski), New York (Carson Cooman, I-Uen Hwang), faculty of UCLA (Daivd Lefkowitz) ), UT at San Marcos(Dimitar Ninov) , UTD (Robert Rodriguez), and Southeastern Oklahoma State University (James Wintle) among others.

The featured artists includes the Long Duo -- Beatrice and Christina Long, one of the most sought-after piano duos in North America, Luca Bruno (piano, SMU), Mitch Weverka (guitar), Karen Lim (violin), Joel Adair (trumpet), Jason Hausback (trombone) Drew Lang and Greg White (percussion).

The concert is at 7:30 PM, May 20 (Tuesday) at Courtyard Theater of Eisemann Center of Performing Arts, Richardson.

Yuri Anshelevich in Recital at Preston Hollow Presbyterian

Russian-born cellist Yuri Anshelevich, Associate Principal Cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, will present a free recital at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening, March 30, at 7:00 p.m. Accompanied by pianist Christina Long, the program will include works by Brahms, de Falla, Schumann and Shostakovich.

Accepted to the Moscow State Conservatory at the age of fourteen, Mr. Anshelevich graduated from there with highest honors. He also won
First Prize in the Cello Division of the All-Russian Competition. He studied with Mstislav Rostropovich. Since then, he has won wide critical acclaim for concert and recital performances the world over. He is often described as a performer of power, imagination and vitality.

The program is a part of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church's Concert Classics series. There is no charge for admission, but donations are gratefully accepted to assist with the expenses of the concert. You are welcomed to an evening of cello and piano music. The associated principal cellist of Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Yuri Anshelevich, and Dr. Christina Long are going to present a concert at 8 PM at Preston Hallow Presbyterian Church on March 21 (Wednesday). The concert is free admission. The program includes music by Bach, Beethoven, Prokofiev and Debussy.

Graudated from Moscow State Conservatory, Yuri Anshelevich made his recital debut at the age of 9, received First Prize in the Cello Division of the All-Russian Competition, which led to studies with world-famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Active as both a soloist and chamber musician, his repertoire includes every major work written for cello. He and his wife, Olga, have one adult son, Leonard.

The winnder of Piano Duo Competition of National Federation of Music Clubs, Christina Long has served as Assistant Professor of Music of Westfield State College, Westfield, Massachusetts and Tabor College, Kansas and the artist-in-residence in Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Her concert appearances included a sold-out Carnegie Weill Recital Hall recital, Lincoln Center of New York, Meyerson Hall of Dallas, Washington DC, Canada, Taiwan, China and Poland.

A top-prize winner of several international competitions which include Cleveland International Piano Competition, she has played to critical acclaim in Central America, south east Asia, France, Belgium, Switzerland and in the United States. She has given recitals in Ravinia and Fontainebleau Festivals, and was invited as a guest soloist with the Baltimore Symphony, Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico, National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, Taipei City Symphony and Civic Orchestra, Jura Symphony Orchestra of France, Laredo Philharmonic, New Amsterdam Orchestra of New York, and the Concert Series at the Presidential Palace in Taiwan. The American Record Guide described her Scriabin Mazurkas disc on Naxos as ‘impressive on many levels’. She was under the tutelage of Mieczyslaw Horszowski, Leon Fleisher, Fou Ts’ong and Enrique Graf at the Curtis Institute and Peabody Conservatory, where she graduated with honors.

Christina has served as the Artist-in-Residence in Southeast State Oklahoma University, an Assistant Professor of Piano at Westfield State College in Massachusetts, and Tabor College in Kansas. Most recently she made debut in Dallas’ Meyerson Hall as soloist with the Asian American Youth Orchestra, and played recitals with Dallas Chamber Orchestra. Her awards include the First Prize from the Kingsville International Young Performer’s Competition and Sherman Symphony Orchestra Soloist Competition. Christina has performed as a recitalist and chamber musician in the US, Taiwan, and Poland where her performances were described as having “unusual elasticity, colors, rhythmic clarity and creative fantasies’. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree form the University of North Texas, where she received the Dissertation Award for Excellence in Musical Performance. Her teachers include Adam Wodnicki, Vladimir Viardo, and Lillian Long. She has recorded for Centaur Records, and has been commissioned by the Ubiquitous Publishing Company to translate the book ‘My Life With Great Pianists’ by Franz Mohr.

Hailed as artists who play with "cohesiveness of purpose, absolute accuracy of execution and a near-spiritual transparency", the Long sisters placed first in the 1997 Ellis Duo Piano Competition sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs. In addition to the First Prize, the Long Duo also won the Best Performance of American Music Award, and was immediately invited to perform throughout the United States and Asia. Their performances were broadcast on National Public Radio, WRR in Dallas among others. In a raving review from the Washington Post, the Long sisters were praised for "putting new life into duo piano recitals".

Most recently, Long Duo performed in the Weill Recital Hall Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center New York, Dallas Museum of Arts, Phillips Gallery and Embassy Concert Series in Washington D.C., Spoletto Festival in Charleston, SC, Concert Series of Plano Symphony and Laredo Symphony Orchestras, as well as Concert Halls in Calgary, Canada and Wu-hang, Sheng-Yang in China among others. They were invited to appear in the ‘Outstanding Chinese Musicians’ Series in the National Concert Hall of Taipei, Taiwan. And subsequently they were invited to play throughout Taiwan in April 2005.
